4 Media Myths That Can Cause You Problems

Over the last 5 years, I have assisted in coordinating at least a thousand media interviews. Working with reporters is exhilarating and humbling. Most often it's both at once. Cooperating|Working} with the media|Cooperating with tape is rolling|mic is on.
Although the medium by which the news is delivered changes over time, from the decline of newspapers to the increased popularity of the blog - the basics haven’t changed. What makes a good story and manner in which to conduct yourself in an interview have never changed.
Here’s four media myths that companies must shatter if they are to be successful when being interviewed:
1. The media is my friend. Journalists is doing a job – and that job is reporting Although the journalist may have been favorable in the past|wrote a positive story in the past}, doesn’t mean you’ll get a positive story in the future.
2. Reporters are out to get me. Occasionally yes, but most often not. Editors simply want a good story.
3. You’re better off not telling. Hiding information can ruin trust not only with the media but with your customers and employees. Today's world respects and expects honesty.
4. I have to answer every question the journalist asks. Remember that you have control over what you do and do not say. Just as the journalist is allowed to ask, you {can choose|are {allowed|free to not answer. Just redirect the question to your main points if you don’t want to answer.
