Fleet Tracking System

By: Jamiel Dcosta

A Fleet Tracking System can give you peace-of-mind and save your company money day in and day out. Current technologies such as the internet, wireless communications systems, a constellation of GPS satellites, and microelectronics make the Fleet Tracking System possible.

The core of this Fleet Tracking System is the constellation of 24 GPS satellites that orbit the Earth. This constellation was launched in the 1980’s by the U.S. Department of Defense. Designed and deployed initially for military use, the system was made available to civilian use in the mid 1980s. These satellites operate 24/7/365 at no direct cost to the end-user.

In order to utilize the GPS satellites, you need a device to receive the data and relay it to the end-user. In comes the Fleet Tracking System device. It has a wireless RF modem, a GPS receiver, logic, memory, and power management circuitry. Wired into the vehicle’s ignition system, the device gets power from a reliable source while at the same time allowing it to detect the vehicle’s ignition status. With the GPS location available at all times, the Fleet Tracking System can tell you when the vehicle is moving or idling. The size of the device has been dramatically decreased due to advancements in microelectronics. So, it is very easy to install in a vehicle and hide if a covert setup is needed.

Another key component in the Fleet Tracking System is the wireless cellular network. Although the earliest Fleet Tracking System used a satellite uplink to communicate with the network, it is expensive relative to the ubiquitous cellular telephone network. In addition, the cellular network now covers 96% of the U.S. population. Because of the competition and huge overall base of customers, the cost of service and equipment has been lowered so much so that a small business owner can now afford the equipment and monthly monitoring service.

The internet is the final component of the Fleet Tracking System. It provides the path into and out of the network servers that store all of the location and event data transmitted by the device. The data transmitted by the Vehicle Tracking Device goes through the cellular network, into the internet, where it ends up stored in a database on the web server. This information is stored until queried by the end-user from a mapping web site. Almost magically, this all happens in less than a second.

The components of the Fleet Tracking System combine to make a valuable product that can help to lower a company’s costs, increase productivity, and ultimately improve the bottom line.
