Air Powered Nail Guns: The Right Choice?

By: Omar Rashad.

If you have a big task to accomplish, a nail gun is much more practical than a hammer. Hammers are good to drive a dozen nails, yet if you need to drive hundreds or maybe thousands of nails between morning and evening, your muscles will thank you for purchasing a nail gun. If you're intending to get a nail gun, though, you ought to just go for an air powered product which will come with more power and better mechanical quality. No manufacturer makes an all purpose nail gun; each type of gun is designed for a certain application. Below are explanations of various styles of air-powered guns, each type having a model currently available to consumers.

Roofing guns are produced specifically to drive nails through shingles and fixed into the roof deck. Thanks to the overwhelming quantity of nails employed on a regular roof, many roofing nail guns employ coiled nail cartridges made to carry up to 300 nails in each cartridge. One illustration of a quality constructed, high-performance air powered roofing nailer is the Bostitch RN46-1. This nail gun provides contact and sequential trip firing, and a user-friendly gauge to control your shingle spacing. This tool retails on Amazon for $225.

A framing nail-gun should be as powerful as a roofing nail gun, although needs to be less heavy and easier to maneuver, as the person should be able to work it from several different angles, including overhead work. Framing guns accommodate either coil cartridges or less capacious stick cartridges, which only contain between 20 to 40 nails. Those stick cartridges are more time consuming, because you will be required to reload very often, although they reduce the net weight of this gun.

Milwaukee's 7110-202 Framing Nailer is an example of those stick nail guns that happens to be both lightweight and sturdy. Additional features include an in-line air filter that prevents dust or debris from gumming up the tool, and a removable no-mar tip to protect the workpiece from gouging. A 7110-202 framing gun might be in your toolbox for somewhere near $250.00.

A brad nail gun is even lighter and is intended more for accuracy than brute force. The adjustable depth setting and bonded no-mar pad on this tool would be required on any quality brad gun, and extra features such as a low-nail prompt and trigger lock are worth looking for. DeWalt's D51238K Brad Nailer has all of the aforementioned features and several more, jammed in a $95.00 present and decorated with a 5-year warranty for a bow.

You probably wouldn't want to rely on a framing gun to fasten trim to a dollhouse. Conversely, a brad gun will be virtually useless for pushing nails through a truss beam. Getting the suitable tool for the job applies to air powered nail guns the same as every other tool.
