By: Martin Minnie
Whether you are obese or just suffering from being overweight, your health could be affected in a serious way. Statistics indicate that of the one billion adults that suffer from being overweight, more than three hundred million are actually obese. The World Health Organization has found that the obesity rate in North America, Eastern Europe, UK and China has risen a few hundred percent. This is caused mostly by the increase in the availability and selection of nutrient deficient food. So the question on most over weight peoples mind are, what is the health risks being obese?
People that suffer from obesity have more than fifty percent chance of suffering or dying from illnesses than people considered being a healthy weight. A person is being considered to be obese if they have a Body Mass Index higher than 30 and are usually expected to have a shorter life span. Obesity has been proven to cause and increase the probability of suffering from one or more of the following diseases and illnesses.
- Cancer can develop. Being obese or just overweight can greatly increase your chances of suffering from cancers like colon and breast cancer.
- Heart Diseases can occur. Being overweight encourage the build up of fatty materials that line the walls of the major arteries like the coronary arteries. This buildup of fatty materials causes the arteries to get narrower and restricting the blood flow to the heart. The heart diseases that are often caused by this are stroke, heart attacks and high blood pressure.
- Arthritis can also be caused or made worse by being overweight. This is because joints like knees, back and hips suffer from increased pressure caused by the extra weight that they have to carry. This is usually very painful and is not reversible.
- Having a high cholesterol level can cause small stones to form in the gall bladder that can lead to very painful Gallstones.
One should take care to try and not become obese as it can be very difficult to lose the weight once you reach that stage. This is because of the condition of your muscles and how much exercise you will actually be able to do. If you have reached an obese level of overweight, you should start your exercise routine slowly. Start with something like incorporating a daily walk into your routine. This will initiate the change in your weight and will be a good start to getting to a healthy weight.
