Card making is the art of creating greeting cards by hand. Many people who used to be interested in related crafts such as scrapbook making and stamping are slowly channeling their skills to making hand-made cards. This has brought about a rise in the popularity of the hobby and as a business venture, as well.





Evident of this is the influx of several art and crafts books and magazines targeting this particular set of craft makers in the past recent years. There are likewise many reading materials and websites online that feature this specific activity.

When you drop by the card section of some bookstores, you will notice that there is a much bigger space for handmade greeting cards, as compared to previous years. The thrust towards anything environment-friendly also contributed to the gaining success of the use of recycled materials in card making.

Small businesses are also continually being set up by craft enthusiasts. This should come as no surprise because the business has low setup costs.

In this age of digital technology, emails and e-cards, one may ask if handmade cards would fit in the scenario. Most enterprising card makers would definitely give a big yes.

They know so well that there has been a trend that began to take shape in the 1980s. There is a part of the consuming market that is looking for cards that are different from the usual types that they see in the stores. They are looking for more personalized, original and unique items. This propelled the handmade card making industry to what it is today.

It should be noted that the industry also benefited from the advancements in the digital technology. Digital softwares can create images, colors and shapes that would look great in combination with materials that are used traditionally. Designs and great ideas are also being exchanged actively over the internet amongst this avid crafters.

More importantly, the cyberspace opened a whole new world of possibilities with regard to selling the cards. There are a lot of websites and auction sites where people can sell their products to practically anyone in the world. However, it is interesting to note that conventional venues for showcasing the items are still around, such as trade fairs, local markets, school events and church affairs.

So, in this day and age of modern technology, traditional crafts still has a place; and in fact, it successfully used the tools of the advanced era to its advantage.
