Childrens Books – How Can I Get My Child To Read Books?

By: Scott Constable

Many parents have to deal with this issue at some point while raising their children. I have been confronted on several occasions as to how to get a child to read when they have little or no interest in picking up a book. The most sound advice that I can give is to be patient.

How do you determine if you are being too patient? First, it must be determined why a particular child will not read. If it is just a matter of the child not liking what they are instructed to read, then it is quite simple to find a book that will interest them. Does your child prefer to read comic books or sporting magazines instead of a book from the library? The simple answer is to just let them. The key is to not show them that you are frustrated with their lack of reading. Of course, it will depend on the age of the child, just how much you may need to push them.

If your child is just beginning to learn to read, the last thing you want to do is to force them to read too much. When a child that has little interest in reading is pushed it tends to stick with them for a long time. This may cause some to hate to read even as adults. For those children who have been reading for a period of time that show no interest in reading you will need to be a bit more creative. Offer a small incentive for reading.

Remember that the result that you are after is to get them to read. What they are reading is of little issue. Give them the say as to what to read. When they feel that they have the control you will be surprised as to how much that their interest will change for the better. Once they start showing an interest in reading is when you will want to offer some suggestions as to what they may want to read. Show interest in what they are reading and read the same things that they are reading is a great way to build their enthusiasm.

About the Author:

I am a believer that reading is essential in the development of a child. After months of research I am convinced that reading is the most important stage of developing a child intellectually. I am a father of 4 children. To assist in giving you reading ideas I have included a link to a childrens book store and a blog that is strictly for childrens books.
