Traveling to Mexico? Want to experience what Mexico is really like? If so, there are some places where you can truly immerse yourself in real Mexican culture. People watching is a great way to learn about a place and its inhabitants.





Town Squares

In every city and village you visit, you will find a town plaza or park. Spend some time there. Get a beverage or a delicious snack and watch the people go by. Town plazas are at the heart of Mexican society. Oaxaca's plaza is grand and beautiful, yet intimate. Veracruz offers tropical sights and music.

When you get to Mexico City, visit the square at Alameda. Despite its dark history, this square is colorful and bright. It has become the place for lovers to go for a quick meal or to listen to music. The Jardin plaza in San Miguel de Allende, on the other hand, is the center of art. Many artists gather there to work and sketch the scenic beauty.

Fireworks

Fireworks are very popular in Mexico. They put on a grand show for every festival. The most lavish displays are the castillos, while the wildest ones are the toros, where men run through the streets carrying fireworks over their shoulders.

Music

Mexico is rich in music. Mariachi is popular in Mexico City and Guadalajara. Romantic songs sung by boleros will soothe the wildest heart. In the tropical regions, you may hear a lot of "musica tropical" made up of cha-chas and mambos.

If you listen, most Mexican music has a nice dancing beat. Everyone loves to dance in Mexico. Whether you are watching professional ballet companies or enjoying a bit of folk dancing at a local festival, you will see how important dance is to the Mexican people. Some villages, like Merida, hold park dances nightly and everyone is invited. The colorful displays you will see are something you will never forget. If you happen to come across a festival while you visit, you will have a great time. With traditional costumes, great food and music you will enjoy every minute.

The Seaside

If you like the beach, take a stroll down the wide sidewalks that front the seaside roads. These areas are full of entertainers, locals, and vendors selling food and wares. Visit these boardwalks in La Paz, Cozumel, Mazatlan, Veracruz, and Puerto Vallarta. Moreover, do not forget the great seafood!

Eating

While we are on the subject of food, you cannot find more flavorful or colorful food than the authentic Mexican recipes you will find during your travels. Chicken, beef, pork, and seafood are all cooked with great artistry. Experiment and try something new. Fresh food is the order of the day when you are in Mexico. Eat everywhere and try the native cuisine the way it is meant to be prepared. Your whole concept of what Mexican food is will be forever altered.

Enjoy your travels in Mexico. Submersing yourself in another culture actually teaches you more about yourself. Take some time to truly observe those around you. They may eat different foods or have different habits, but basically we are all the same. Open yourself up to explore and embrace this amazing culture. You will not ever be the same.
