Attempting Your Own Auto Repair

By: Allen Wright

You are in your car as you enter your driveway. The car is moaning and squeaking. Suddenly is quits. When you open the hood, you notice a problem. The serpentine belt has broken. Do you call someone to fix it? A mechanic will perform the target="_blank" auto repair . Can you afford the expense? You need the car to get to work. Is it time to fix it yourself? Maybe you should consider it?

Serpentine belts are relatively simple to replace, in most circumstances. In some vehicles, they may not be easy to access. However, most vehicles are not too difficult. One of the first things you can do is search online. There will usually be forums and information for your make of car. You will need a routing diagram for the new belt. There may be one under the hood. This will show you how the new belt goes on the car.

Belt tensioner are what keeps the serpentine belt on the system. Belt tensioners have inner springs and a pulley. On the opposite side of the tensioner is the idler pulley. It is a pulley mounted to the block. It keeps the belt balanced. You can usually release tension on the belt by moving the tensioner. You stick a socket driver or wrench on them and push.

Do you want to do a good job? How long do you plan to keep the car? Put a new tensioner and idler pulley on for a good job. These parts can go bad and ruin your belt. This can leave you stuck without transportation or stranded. Buy a very good serpentine belt. Do not go for the economy type. They are cheaper for a reason.

Next, you can price compare, if there are more than one auto parts store nearby. You can call them for a price, or you can check out their website. Sometimes, prices will vary a lot, from place to place.

Be sure that all surfaces are wiped down and clean, before the new belt. Try to enlist a helper for the job. You can do it alone, but it is easier with help. Check to make sure the belt is routed properly. Save the last connection for the top. The belt may not go on easily. Hold down on the tensioner. You may have to help it with a screwdriver. Make sure not to damage any components. When the belt goes on you release the tensioner. That is it.

In closing

You can make your own auto repairs. Take the time to know what to do. Consider preventative care. Try to replace things before they break, if possible.
